Yaxu travelling: Festival as vitality
12th March about 12:30-1 pm A light went back to the ocean
As soon as Shoko started to talk. She said, “It might be difficult to let you meet the residents of the island today since there was a resident who passed away today”. It must be so hard to perceive death every time. The average age of the residents is 90 years old. Shoko said that because of Covid-19, people needed to cancel the annual festival with dancing and drumming. People on the island used to do the festival for three days in a row and they even joined another festival on another island. It sounded like the festival was their vitality. I heard that the person who used to drum passed away and a singer is in a coma now. I felt the importance of receiving stories and traditions of life here.
12th March about 12:30-1 pm Shoko as Anamt’u’ul
Shoko is such an open-minded person with a beautiful smile. Her presence so healed me. I was nervous at the beginning but eventually, she opened my child's side, which was like Yaxu touching Anamt’u’u. By letting me smell her food, looking at her smile, and eating her Onigiri, I become connected. While talking, the sky was getting brighter and brighter. And the ocean showed its different faces. That transition showed as if I, as Yaxu changed myself too. There was tea, Onigiri with shiso leaves, Miso soup made of bonito, pickles and Daikon and fried tofu.
