Ash walk with an eagle, and lavender, becoming a stone and a cat
I finally had a Butoh session with Hana-chan. The first meditation felt like a pillar of myself. I imagined it to be like a tube through which a very cool breeze passed. Even so, sometimes there were bumps on the surface that blocked the wind, so a fairy-like creature removed the bumps. When the tip of my head turned blue-purple, the fairies told me, “You have a good wind path. The fairy must be my body's master.
The practice of attaching the string to my heart and shoulders reminded me of the dance performed by the Alaskan Eskimos in the movie “Drums of Winter”. When I did the opening and closing of the chest, I felt like a bird, like a wave, like the ebb and flow of the tide. As I did that opening and closing movement, I started to smile and also felt warm and teary. I'm sure the warm chi turned around because I was breathing so well. I wonder if waves, the waxing and waning of the moon, and the ebb and flow of the waves are also repeating encounters and partings, smiles and tears. It reminded me of an old female eagle that flies by my hometown every year and has been returning to the same tree for more than 20 years in a row. Everyone calls her “the grandmother of Mount Yamamoto". Every year everyone thinks, “This year will be the last. That is why we rejoice with all our might while she is here, and enjoy our sadness and grief when she leaves. That eagle grandmother seems to be heading to Russia every year. I am always amazed at the providence of nature that makes the rounds between Russia and Japan with its life on the line. I was remembering this as I meditated on the flapping of the wings.
After that we did the Ash walk. First I was told to “become a stick,” which was hard to do, but when I imagined a matchstick, I think I started to catch fire. I could feel my head slowly burning and turning to ashes. Once the ashes were gone, my body began to slip away. Little by little it became lighter and feathery. The process of dying was like changing something very heavy, like lead, from something small to something large. Gradually it turned to stone. When it crouched down and completely turned to stone, I was suddenly relieved. Perhaps I touched it when I crouched down, or perhaps the scent of lavender wafted through the air, and it was as if I had arrived at the entrance to heaven. When I looked at the world from the stone, I saw blue and yellow lights. It was getting warmer, as if the weather had changed, even though we were supposed to be having this session in the rain. Hana-chan said, “Please carry a mountain on your back and two cats on your shoulders,” and I, who was a round stone, became a round cat. Then I felt my body spinning lightly in circles. Later, Hana-chan and I talked about how cats might be in the middle of the door between consciousness and unconsciousness, going back and forth. I was also happy to carry a mountain on my back. Since I am now in a place where there are no mountains, I felt like it taught me that the mountains exist inside of me. Maybe it was the sound of the rain, but I also felt like I was swimming in the ocean, and after the session was over, I was groggy like after getting off a boat. I suddenly wondered if the feeling of rebirth is like coming out of the amniotic fluid again.
